Generator oil & service: buying guide

The tonewheel generator is the heart of the organ, and it lives on oil. Dozens of small bearings are fed by cotton threads that wick oil from cups on top of the generator. When the cups run dry or threads break, the organ gets slow to start, noisy, or eventually seizes. This section has the oil, tools and parts to keep a generator healthy.

Use a light organ oil made for tonewheel generators; never 3-in-1 or motor oil, which are too heavy and gum up the threads. The oil cups are on the generator and on the vibrato scanner and run motor, and your service manual shows each oiling point. Fresh oil can take several days to wick down to the bearings, so an organ that has sat for years may need oiling and patience before it starts reliably.

The generator also contains filter capacitors, 43 in all on console and M-series generators, that shape the higher tones. The original wax-paper capacitors drift upward in value with age and dull the treble. Our filter capacitor kit replaces them with film capacitors, never ceramic disc types. Oil and generator parts here suit the B-3, C-3, A-100 and M-3; check the listing for the L-100.

Common questions

What oil should I use in a tonewheel organ?

A light organ oil made for tonewheel generators. Don't use 3-in-1, motor oil or household oils; they're too thick and can gum up the wicks and bearings. Fill the cups and give the oil several days to work down to the bearings.

How often should I oil the generator?

Follow the schedule in your service manual. For an organ that has been sitting unused, oil all the points, then oil again after a few days, since dry threads and felts soak up a lot before oil reaches the bearings.

Why replace the generator filter capacitors?

The original wax-paper capacitors drift upward in value as they age, which detunes the filters and dulls the upper tones. Replacing them with film capacitors restores brightness. The job involves careful soldering inside the generator.

My organ hums or runs slowly after sitting for years. Where do I start?

Oil the generator, scanner and run motor first and wait a few days. Hard starting is often a dry generator or a sticky start-motor pinion. If it runs but hums, the amp or preamp electrolytic capacitors are the next thing to check.
