Run & start motors: buying guide

Console tonewheel organs start in two steps. You hold the start switch so the start motor spins the generator up to speed, then flip the run switch so the synchronous run motor locks to mains frequency and keeps the pitch steady. If either motor or switch is tired, the organ won't start, won't stay running or drifts in pitch. This section covers both motors and the run capacitor used on L-100 spinets.

The rebuilt synchronous run motor listed here fits B-3, C-3 and A-100 consoles, and the shaded-pole start motor fits the consoles and the M-3. The L-100 works differently: it has a self-starting run motor fed through a run capacitor, about 1.25 µF on many units. A warbling pitch on an L-100 is a classic sign that capacitor is failing.

Before buying a motor, rule out the cheaper fixes. Hard starting is often caused by a dry generator, a start-motor pinion gear that sticks on its shaft, or a worn run switch. Don't hold the run switch on a generator that won't turn freely; that can overheat the run motor. Oil first, work the pinion gear by hand, then test again.

Common questions

What's the difference between the start motor and the run motor?

The start motor spins the generator up to speed while you hold the start switch. The run motor is synchronous: once switched on, it locks to the mains frequency and holds the organ at the correct pitch.

My organ won't start. Do I need a new start motor?

Not always. Check that the start-motor shaft slides in and springs back, and that the pinion gear moves freely on its shaft. Oil both, oil the generator, then try again before replacing the motor.

How do I know my L-100 run capacitor is failing?

A warbling or wavering pitch, especially after the organ warms up, is the usual sign. Replace it promptly with a motor-run capacitor of the same value and at least the same voltage rating as the original.

Will this run motor fit my M-3?

The rebuilt synchronous run motor is listed for B-3, C-3 and A-100 consoles. The start motor fits consoles and the M-3. Check your existing motor and mounting before ordering for a spinet.
