Capacitors & recap kits: buying guide

Electrolytic capacitors in 50- and 60-year-old preamps and amplifiers dry out. Symptoms include hum that wasn't there before, thumps, fading volume and, in the worst case, damaged tubes or transformers. A recap replaces those aging capacitors with new ones and is one of the most worthwhile services you can give a vintage organ or Leslie.

Our kits are organised by chassis. The AO-28 preamp kit fits the B-3, C-3 and A-100, which share that preamp. The AO-29 kit, with ten electrolytic capacitors, fits the M-3 and M-100. There are also kits for the Leslie 122 amplifier and for L-100 series spinets. The L-100 motor run capacitor is sold on its own under Run & start motors, and tonewheel generator filter capacitors have their own kit under generator service.

Tube amplifiers store dangerous voltages even when unplugged, so recap work is for people experienced with high-voltage electronics or for a qualified technician. Have the schematic for your chassis on hand, replace one capacitor at a time, and observe polarity on every electrolytic. Each kit lists what it contains so you can check it against your chassis before you start.

Common questions

Which recap kit do I need for a B-3?

The B-3 uses the AO-28 preamp, shared with the C-3 and A-100, so you need the AO-28 preamp capacitor kit. If your B-3 plays through a Leslie 122, that amplifier has its own recap kit.

Do you have a recap kit for the M-3?

Yes. The M-3 and M-100 use the AO-29 amplifier, which has ten electrolytic capacitors. The AO-29 kit includes all ten.

Does the L-100 kit include the motor run capacitor?

No. The L-100 series kit covers the electrolytic capacitors. The motor run capacitor, about 1.25 µF on many units, is sold separately in the Run & start motors section.

Can I recap my organ myself?

If you are comfortable soldering and know how to work safely around high voltage, yes. Tube amps hold lethal voltages even when unplugged. If you're unsure, a qualified technician can install the kit.
